The Church Fathers

The Church Fathers were bishops, theologians, and teachers who shaped Christian thought in the early church. Their sermons, letters, and commentaries wrestled with Scripture, defended the faith, and guided believers through times of persecution and peace.

Names like Augustine, Athanasius, Chrysostom, and Ambrose might sound distant, but their words remain startlingly relevant. They wrote about doubt and certainty, suffering and joy, the mysteries of the Incarnation and the struggles of daily discipleship. The Lectionary

Our readings follow a two-year cycle developed by the Centre for Catholic Studies at Durham University. This lectionary moves through the church year—Advent's anticipation, Christmas's joy, Lent's sobriety, Easter's triumph, and the long season of Ordinary Time—pairing each day with a passage from the Fathers that illuminates the season's themes.

You don't need to know where you are in the liturgical calendar. We handle that. You just read.

What time do emails arrive?

8 AM Eastern Time. When you subscribe, you select your timezone, and we'll show you what time that corresponds to in your local time. For example, if you're in Pacific Time, your reading arrives at 5 AM; in Central European Time, it arrives at 2 PM.

Can I change my timezone?

Currently, you'd need to unsubscribe and re-subscribe with the new timezone. We're working on making this easier.

What if I miss a day?

No problem—the reading is in your inbox whenever you're ready for it. Each day follows the liturgical calendar, so you can read at your own pace or catch up on days you missed.

What translations do you use?

We use established English translations from reputable sources, including public domain texts and modern scholarly editions.
